John McCown serves as a Research Associate II at the Social Science Research Center (SSRC). His research interests involve children’s health and wellness, urban sociology, criminology, technology and social interaction, human ecology, and statistics and data management. He is currently working on several projects including: the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Mississippi data project; the Mississippi KIDS COUNT data center and annual Fact Book (funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation); and a project to develop a state-wide system for childhood developmental screenings (funded by HRSA).

Previous projects include: the Mississippi Division of Medicaid assessment of emergency room utilization; the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) assessment of the Mississippi Healthy Students Act of 2007; the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation’s Project Fit America Evaluation; the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation project; the W.K. Kellogg Foundation survey for race relations in Mississippi; the Center for Mississippi Health Policy survey on the Affordable Care Act in Mississippi; the Mississippi Association of Grantmakers (MAG) project on Mississippi based charity foundations; a juvenile crime study that was partnered with BOTEC Analysis in California; a national survey on child care centers for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP); a survey on school readiness of Mississippi kindergarten classrooms; and an evaluation for the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi.

Mr. McCown holds a B.A. in Sociology with certification in criminal justice and corrections (2007), and a M.S. in Sociology (2011), both from Mississippi State University. Before joining the SSRC in April of 2012, Mr. McCown served as Teaching Assistant in the Department of Sociology at MSU between 2009 and 2011 while completing his Master’s degree. His thesis explored the potential relationship between state economic development policies and child well-being. During his time in graduate school and at the SSRC, Mr. McCown has conducted extensive research, data management, statistical analyses, and contributed to several peer-reviewed journal articles.
