New Projects

Dr. Robert McMillen will serve as Principal Investigator for  “Smoke-Free Policy Disparities and Outcomes in Rural Communities in Southern States.”  The University of Kentucky College of Nursing and National Institutes of Health are sponsoring this project.

Awards & Recognitions

Dr. Cindy Bethel has been invited to serve on the Government Affairs Committee for the Computing Research Association (CRA). This group provides guidance on congressional legislation related to computing. Dr. Bethel also serves on CRA’s national board of directors. Read more at https://cra.org/govaffairs.

Viswadeep Lebakula, an SSRC graduate research assistant, successfully defended his dissertation. Lebakula is a student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Drs. Kathleen Ragsdale and Mary Read-Wahidi’s research program in Zambia –  which is titled FishFirst! Zambia: Research for Development and Scaling Staple-Fish Products for Enhanced Nutrition in the First 1,000 Days of Life  –  was the lead story in the October issue of the USAID’s Feed the Future Newsletter. Mississippi Alcohol Safety & Education Program

On October 2nd a Motivational Interviewing training class was held in Flowood, MS for all new MASEP facilitators. The class was conducted by Dr. Blythe McCance of the MASEP Operations staff. The new facilitators in attendance were Grant Myers (Philadelphia), Brett Watson (Starkville), Teandra Jones (Southaven), Joe Belling (Natchez), Sonya Summerlin (Madison), Jesse Paggert (Brandon), and Garrett Starkey (Wesson & Florence).

Dr. Blythe McCance, Chuck Dawkins, and Billy Brister of MASEP Operations attended the Mississippi Justice Court Judges conference held in Biloxi from October 6-8.

Wolfgang Frese Survey Research Laboratory

As part of a summative evaluation of the Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant Oil Spill Science Outreach Program, the Survey Research Laboratory administered a web-based survey to more than 2,500 program stakeholders. Responses to this survey will assist researchers in improving future oil spill outreach programs. The Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant Oil Spill Science Outreach Program is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the Florida, Mississippi-Alabama, and Texas Sea Grant Programs.

Presentations & Conference Participation

Tockie Hemphill attended the Zero To Three Virtual Annual Conference 2021 October 25th– 29th. The conference’s theme was “Take Heart” and focused on the P-5 Competency Domains:  Early Childhood Development, Family-Centered Practice, Relationship-Based Practice, Health & Developmental Protective & Risk Factors, Cultural & Linguistic Responsiveness, Leadership to Meet Family Needs & Improve Services & Systems, Professional & Ethical Practices, and Service Planning, Coordination, & Collaboration.

Dr. Connie Baird-Thomas, Dr. Heather Hanna, Laure Bell, Tockie Hemphill, Callie Poole, and Amber Tatum attended Mississippi Families for Kids’ 8thannual Black Family Summit on October 21, 2021. The summit’s theme was the economic impact of health inequity and racial justice.

Callie Poole attended the National Black Child Development Institute’s national conference on October 14th and 15th. The conference focused on the challenges facing Black children, families, and communities as well as on the success, resilience, assets, and strengths of Black culture.

Drs. Kathleen Ragsdale and Mary Read-Wahidi were co-presenters on a special panel session, Gender Across USAID’s Feed the Future Innovation Labs: Lessons and Approaches that Cultivate Gender-Transformative Agricultural Development. The session was presented at the Cultivating Equality Conference 2021: Advancing Gender Research in Agriculture and Food Systems,” which was supported by the CGIAR Gender Platform and by Wageningen University & Research.
