Dr. Holli Seitz received funding from the MSU Office of Research and Economic Development for an undergraduate research program titled “Advancing Undergraduate Research in Communication Science.” This funding will allow her to provide research experiences in the Message Laboratory for two undergraduate students in the coming year.
Dr. Kathleen Ragsdale will serve as Principal Investigator for year 3 of the Focus4Teens Evaluation. The research goal is to collect and analyze evaluation data on efforts to enhance teen pregnancy prevention in the Mississippi Delta by expanding access to and use of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services to vulnerable youth ages 15-19 in the region. Dr. Mary-Read Wahidi will serve as Co-PI. The project is sponsored Mississippi First and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The research goal is to understand gender inequity in the agricultural sector in order to help transition rural women, their families, and their communities towards better food security, health and economic development. Dr. Mary-Read Wahidi will serve as a Senior Research Scientist. The project is sponsored by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champain and the US Agency on International Development.
Dr. Linda Southward will serve as Principal Investigator for a planning grant to determine the feasibility of establishing the Children’s Foundation of Mississippi. The project is sponsored, in part, by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
The SSRC hosted Dee and Pug Winokur on October 27th. While here, they met with individuals on different projects. These meetings included Dr. Arthur Cosby and Dr. Linda Southward of the SSRC, Dr. John Green from the University of Mississippi School of Law, members of Delta Directions, Sammy Moon from the Mississippi Association of Grantmakers, Dean Chris Snyder from the Mississippi State University Shackouls Honors College, and others.
On behalf of the Tobacco Control Unit at the Social Science Research Center, the Wolfgang Frese Survey Research Laboratory is conducting a survey measuring public opinion regarding the taxation of tobacco products. The dual-frame (landline & cellphone), random-digit-dial, telephone-based survey includes a representative sample of 800 adults residing in the state of Mississippi. The primary investigator for this research is Dr. Robert McMillen, Associate Director of the Tobacco Control Unit and Professor of Psychology. The survey administration is being directed by Dr. John F. Edwards, MAFES Research Scientist and Associate Research Professor at the Social Science Research Center.
Megan Stubbs-Richardson was awarded the Graduate Paper of Distinction Award for her paper entitled, “Strain among Bullying Victims: Considering the Effect of Alternative Relationships on Prosocial, Asocial, and Antisocial Responses to Physical, Verbal, Relational, and Cyber Bullying” at the Mid-South Sociological Association.
