Dr. Ronald E. Cossman was a reviewer for a fast-tracked manuscript “Impact of Local Care Environment and Social Characteristics on Aggregated Hospital-Fatality Rate from COVID-19 in France: Nationwide Observational Study” for The British Medical Journal. BMJ uses a compulsory open peer review process, in which both authors and reviewers are known.

Sarah Dulaney, an undergraduate research assistant in the SSRC Message Laboratory, has been accepted into the Promoting Recruitment Opportunities in Medicine with Individual Study Experiences (PROMISE) program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine. Sarah is a sophomore Provost Scholar majoring in Microbiology on a pre-med track with a minor in Sociology.

Dr. Holli Seitz, director of the Message Laboratory and an assistant professor in the Department of Communication, was selected as the 2020 recipient of the MSU Alumni Association’s Early Career Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award. More information is available at

Ismail Yigit was awarded Outstanding Doctoral Student by the Mississippi State University Department of Sociology. The winners were selected by the Graduate Admissions and Support Committee of the Department of Sociology.

Dr. Ronald E. Cossman and SSRC Research Fellow Dr. David Swanson published a population estimate of uninfected (at-risk) COVID-19 individuals in Whatcom County, WA. The estimate is designed to provide policymakers with guidance on addressing the potential second surge of COVID-19 cases, as well as the eventual reopening of the community. The estimate was published in the Northwest Citizen, which serves the City of Bellingham and Whatcom County, WA. The article is online at

Dr. Ronald E. Cossman has completed an ESRI sponsored class, “Spatial Data Science: The New Frontiers in Analytics.” The class covered advanced temporospatial analytics including hot spots, outliers, space-time pattern mining, and machine learning/pattern detection.
